Michael has over 12 years of urban planning experience in both municipal government and private consulting contexts. He has managed engagement activities, needs assessments, project reviews and capital planning in the areas of land use and housing. In his current consultancy work, he supports the use of local assets to achieve community development and sustainability outcomes.

Michael was nominated for an Emerald Award for promoting food security in central Edmonton, where he founded two community gardens that are organized and run by a diverse group including recent immigrants, students, seniors and residents of supportive housing. He has international experience from the Netherlands, where he studied urban development and management. His masters study specifically looked at various forms of mixed-income, family-friendly and medium-density housing.

Michael is a past co-chair of the Home for Life committee in Edmonton, where he led pilot projects to transform Edmonton's market to include greater visitability and universal design as part of standard development practices. A Registered Professional Planner (RPP) and a LEED Green Associate, he is also a lecturer in local economic development at the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Extension.
